Can you make a difference?

They have become so routine that we can take them for granted. Today’s jumbo jets are huge engineering marvels that can in just a few seconds accelerate hundreds of people and thousands of pounds of cargo fast enough to lift off the ground and carry them clear across oceans comfortably at speeds of 500-600 miles per hour.

It’s hard to imagine the momentum behind something so massive moving at such speeds. It would seem that nothing could stand in the way of such power.

Not so.

Yesterday at JFK airport, jets were stopped and flight delays reached an hour and a half…because of turtles. That’s right, between 70 and 80 diamondback terrapins feeling frisky left the bay and began crawling across the tarmac looking for attractive places to make little turtles. And they shut the runway down.

Did you ever feel small and insignificant as you face some huge obstacle with all the power and momentum? Have you ever felt like you can’t make a difference? The word “disruption” has a somewhat negative connotation. Disruptions are things that interrupt our normal flow. But disruptions can be very good things if they shake us out of ruts and bring about positive change.

As hundreds of late travelers discovered yesterday, a turtle has the power to stop an airliner—if it goes about it properly. What is there in your life and ministry that has the appearance of a series of 747′s streaming down a runway seemingly unstoppably…but you need to be courageous enough to crawl onto the tarmac and disrupt?
